Important: A sworn translation cannot be produced by simply proofreading a "self-translated document". The sworn translator must translate the entire source document to engage their professional and criminal liability.
Sworn, certified, apostille, legalisation: telling them apart
These four terms are often used interchangeably. They do not cover the same acts and are not obtained from the same authorities.
- Sworn translation
- A translation produced by a translator listed as an expert with a French Court of Appeal, bearing their stamp, signature and statement of conformity.
- Certified translation
- A generic term used abroad. Depending on the country it means a translation accompanied by a statement from the translator or the agency, with no judicial authority involved.
- Apostille
- A certificate issued by an authority of the country of origin authenticating the signature on a document, for countries party to the 1961 Hague Convention.
- Legalisation
- The equivalent procedure for countries outside that convention: it goes through the ministry of foreign affairs and then the consulate of the receiving country.
The final decision rests with the receiving body
Whether a translation is accepted depends on the country, the administration or court involved, the type of document, the certifying authority and any apostille or legalisation requirement. We produce the translation in line with the requirements known for your recipient, but we cannot guarantee their decision.
What to send us before we quote

- The number of pages and a legible scan of each one, including stamps and handwritten notes.
